Murder Me by Joe Con … directed by Alex Henderson

They say no one is really from Los Angeles. Instead, the City of Angels is the product of all the places its pilgrims have left behind, and the sum of all the ghosts who’ve come along for the ride. In a Mecca of dreams made manifest, and the dreamers who bring them to life, it is precisely this amalgamation of individual and collective histories and cultures that gives birth to the city’s unique tapestry of art and music.
It is fitting, then, that like Jim Morrison and countless others before him, Venice is the adopted home and creative backdrop for singer-songwriter Joe Con. A native of central Kentucky, Con blends soulful Southern swagger, sun-drenched, sandy ocean blues, and street savvy hip hop to create a potent brew of musical flavors. His songs range from raucous to reflective, sincere to sardonic. Acoustic and electric guitars interwoven with raw beats move seamlessly beneath waves of melodic poetry, like amplified lullabies sung by the lovechild of Leonard Cohen and Mos Def.
Citing influences as diverse as Woody Guthrie and Wu Tang Clan, the young balladeer draws as much artistic inspiration from Kerouac and Rimbaud as he does from Hendrix and Howling Wolf. Mr. Con is a 21st century troubadour in the truest sense. At seventeen, he bid farewell to the idyllic bluegrass hamlet of his childhood and rambled west to study English at UC Berkeley. Along the way he traded innocence for experience, and forged a poet’s path illuminated by the bright lights and long shadows cast by life in the City of Sin. Living in San Francisco’s Tenderloin district, he was simultaneously fascinated and appalled by the shocking poverty and audacious wealth that existed side by side, a paradoxical duality not unlike the one he encountered daily in his childhood spent shuffling between the serene countryside and bustling college campuses of the commonwealth state. Churchyards and trailer parks became beaches and back alleys.
The balancing act of living and walking in multiple worlds, musical and otherwise, are issues Con fleshes out in the six songs that comprise his latest EP, “I Choose You.” He tightropes the tension between life on the road and the memory of home in the title track, and sprints through a novel’s worth of relationships in “Said and Done.” Recounting loves won and lost with tingling frankness and vulnerability, he admits that although the temptation of excess comes at a steep price, it is one he has clearly already paid in full. Following in the footsteps of William Blake, Mr. Con seems destined to find his palace of wisdom. Painting with rich sounds and words his trials and tribulations, Joe Con welcomes his listeners into a bright, visceral world filled with the fresh promise of triumph over tragedy, all the while reinventing the blues to the beat of LA.

NEW WEBSITE NOW UP… (www.thewordmadefresh.com)

Posted in Uncategorized on June 28, 2010 by Joe Con

Hi Guys, it’s been a wild ride these last few weeks and i’ve been blessed and happy to just hang on for dear life… Actually the end of the school year was amazing. We had celebrations of all kinds for the students, teachers, staff and families alike. There is no better school I’ve had the privilege to be a part of than Larchmont Charter West… GO LCW!! I am already missing the beautiful kindergarten, first and second graders it has been my absolute privilege and honor to teach and learn from this past school year!! If you’d like to learn a bit more about the school, you can visit their website:  www.larchmontcharterweho.org.

So summer is officially here! I have really taken it pretty easy this first week, playing a few shows here and there and making some plans and preparations for the upcoming months. Last week I played a solo acoustic gig @ The World Cafe in Santa Monica. The place has great ambience, an awesome vibe and excellent sound. Josh really took care of me and made the entire night a really cool experience. Thanks to my friends and fans who made the trip out to SM and joined in. Later that night I played another gig, this one totally impromptu (as is the style there) @ The Stronghold (1625 Abbott Kinney @ Venice, Venice, CA) and debuted a new lineup that includes guitars and drums. My friends Jaysm & Nathan & I have been jamming and arranging a few of my songs for almost a month now, and last week @ The Stronghold was the first time we’ve played together for an audience. It was the perfect way to cut teeth on some of these new arrangements and to get some stage legs as a group. It was a dope time.

Coming up I have a few more shows, notably Wednesday, July 7th @ Zanzibar, again in Santa Monica (I guess you can tell I’ve been spending some time on the west side lately…). That should really be a good night. I’ll be opening the show around 9pm, followed by some other excellent acts including my good friend Ultralove @ 11. There will be other dates in July that have yet to be ironed out, so check back with me here or somewhere else online…which brings me to my next item of business…

I have a new website!! Now, it’s not much yet, but it does give me one solid address where I can direct everyone and keep all my stuff in one place! It is called thewordmadefresh.com and you all should take a few minutes to visit it right now… I’ll wait!

OK, now that you’re back…

If you guys have any suggestions it would be greatly appreciated. As you can see my web design skills are pretty much novice at best but it feels good just to have the domain name secured and have a place to direct all my fans and friends. I’m still working on the new album, but it’s getting pretty close. Mastering begins this week…

Last news item of the week, I am planning a trip back east. For the first time in over a year I’ll be back in Kentucky, visiting my mom and seeing lots of friends and family. For those of you who don’t know, I grew up in a tiny hamlet about 25 minutes outside of Lexington called Nonesuch. Yes, it’s a real place and you can really Google it. There is some pretty cool history there and a lot of gorgeous land. I’ll be leaving LA for the Bluegrass on July 27th, and won’t be back in la la land until August 10th. And I am planning at least one show in Lexington (hopefully even more) so stay tuned, I’ll be posting info on that stuff in the coming days.

Also, last but not least, POPLock Gallery has grown again!! Lexie, Devin, Rab Eye, James and the Gang have expanded, joining forces with other artists and galleries to produce BANG! Gallery (354 S Spring St. Downtown LA, 90013). Come see a mind-blowing collection of visual artwork as vast and diverse as the City of Angels itself…. I just might make an appearance on July 8th for Artwalk…. you should too!!

Enjoy your time my friends. Every day is precious. It will never return. Tomorrow is not promised so why wait. Tomorrow never comes anyway, because when it gets here it will be today. So this is all we know. NOW!

All I can say is LIVE LIKE YOU’RE YOUNG!!

blessings to you and all of yours…

Yours Truly,

Joe Con
