R.I.P. Phantom 309

Posted in Uncategorized on March 19, 2010 by Joe Con

Baryn “Phantom309” Byrum is an incredible man. He is a writer, a dreamer, a rapper, a fighter, a lover, and a bad motherf*cker … I say he is those things (and so much more), because to say he merely was those things would be to say that death can take away all his has done, touched and loved… but it cannot. If anything, Phantom’s passing has merely sharpened, defined and confirmed the awesome and mighty Son of God he is, and always will be. Baryn wore a tattoo that read “All There is is All There Was” … Baryn, we love you… Always have, always will. Love is all there ever was, and all there ever is…

In honor of Phantom309’s beautifully epic life and his amazing music, with the help of his incredibly strong and wonderful mom Johna, we present to you “The Light Within,” the definitive collection of Phantom309’s most lasting work. These songs reveal a master at work, a raw, honest and passionate artist who epitomizes what it is to be a true original. Baryn’s imagery was as vivid and wild as his imagination. His dreams and visions bled into his verses, and every bar radiates life, death and all points in between. Despite battling addiction, a theme that recurs throughout much of Phantom’s music, “The Light Within” reminds us all that though we may walk through the valley of the shadow of death, there is a light at the end of the proverbial tunnel. It is by following and honoring that light, come what may, that will eventually re-unite us all on the other side…Baryn just broke on through before the rest of us. Fitting, because Baryn is and always will be a trailblazer, a dreamer, an explorer, a creator and a pioneer of uncharted realms. May you fly and rest in perfect love & light forever & always… may you find the home of your truest heart. ONE LOVE!!!

Updated Bio / “15 Minutes” Press Release

Posted in Uncategorized on February 18, 2010 by Joe Con

Los Angeles, Ca. –  Joe Con is a multi genre artist, singer and songwriter. He has the unique ability to translate his own life experiences into songs with universal appeal.  This is an extraordinary gift. His musical arrangements are noteworthy for their powerful rhythms, dynamic vocals, catchy hooks and thought provoking lyrics. Joe Con is hip-hop at its finest. His humble demeanor and unassuming appearance hide a surprising swagger, confidence and magnetic stage presence, which, coupled with his dizzying wordplay and balanced blend of substance and style put Con head and shoulders above most of today’s one dimensional rappers. He doesn’t stop there, however. Not only does Con write and perform intelligent, imaginative and vivid hip-hop music, but he also plays guitar and harmonica with a bluesy folk/ rock style reminiscent of a young Bob Dylan or Neil Young, or more recently artists like  Beck, G. Love, & Jack Johnson. When you ask Joe about his long term musical goals, he speaks of building a bridge between roots and urban music. Although Joe walks in two very different musical worlds, his innate ability to unite multiple genres creates a fresh sound, sung by a fresh voice capable of capturing and holding the hearts of fans the world over.  Joe Con has already drawn comparisons to legendary performers and personalities of all eras of popular music culture, from John Lennon and Jim Morrison to Mickey Avalon and Kurt Cobain.

Whether rapping or singing and playing, on stage or in the studio, Joe Con works most closely with longtime collaborator and friend CAV3 (pronounced “Cave”), a super-producer, writer, singer, rapper and multi-instrumentalist who, in addition to working on a wide range of projects with various artists, also serves as Con’s DJ, drummer, engineer and band mate. The pair met fortuitously on campus at UC Berkeley in 2003, and quickly began making music together. Along with MC Seneca, the two formed a group called Shadow Caste, playing underground shows throughout the Bay Area, and even recorded an LP called “Co-Pilot.” Though the group eventually disbanded, Con & CAV3 remained determined to answer their calling. Soon, they joined forces with several other musicians and artists to form a crew called Awake Click, living and working out of a rented home in South Berkeley. Dubbed “the Prince Street House,” this became the group’s headquarters, an often chaotic but nonetheless thriving community that not only fostered much creative and spiritual growth, but also provided the launching pad and inspiration for Joe Con’s first album, “Awake & Dreaming.” Completed and released independently in 2006, the 18 track album (produced predominantly by CAV3) features guest production by Dejah Fortune, a longtime friend and collaborator who remains close to the camp, as well as artwork by founding Awake Click member Davey Detail. “A&D” also includes a guest appearance by MC Shing02, whose work on the song “War with the Senses” helped lead to the track’s inclusion on Quiksilver’s surf film “Young Guns 3.” Though CAV3 continues to work with many artists, including Shing02, he & Con’s musical bond has never been stronger. The pair are actively performing throughout the Los Angeles area, continuing to hone their craft and build a following while compiling tracks for Joe Con’s newest album, “The Word Made Fresh.”

The album’s first single is “15 minutes,” an undeniable hit about navigating the pitfalls and excesses of fame. Produced by CAV3 (who else?), the track’s title is a reference to Andy Warhol’s famous quote: “In the future everyone will be famous for 15 minutes.” Not to be outdone, Joe Con has coined his own version of the phrase: “Give us 15 minutes of fame and we’ll change the world.” The song announces the arrival of a new artist with vision and great potential for immediate impact and lasting success. Poignant and poetic, yet fiery, sexy and danceable, “15 Minutes” is three and a half minutes of hip hop perfection with universal appeal that will soon be heard everywhere, from the streets to the club, to college campuses and headphones across the globe.

In 2006 “Awake & Dreaming” was completed. In 2007 “ConCave:  ZooLife” was completed.  Both are available for purchase at most i-stores.

Joe Con’s newest CD, “The Word Made Fresh” is set for release in summer, 2010.

Joe Con has opened for Snoop Dogg on January 21, 2010 at The Galaxy Theatre in Santa Ana, Ca.

Things are really moving!!

The year has started off with a BANG! @ The Embassy!! W’ere doing it BIG for the Lord in 2010!! Visit www.theembassy.cc to learn more. One highlight has been the influx of new visitors we’ve had come to the ministry recently. This has been a huge blessing, as each & every person reveals a new and exciting revelatory aspect of the Living God!! In particular, we have witnessed an increase & resurgent spirit of creativity & artistic flow in the house of God. One small example is a collaboration I recently did with Ayce Sly (www.myspace.com/digitalgrandstaff), a friend and very talented singer, rapper, & producer. He approached me with a very hot beat that has a new motown feel, and a song concept about a love affair with a girl called Music… The result is “Music Makes the World Go Round,” a track that will definitely be making big waves very soon. Don’t worry, we’ll let you know!! We were fortunate enough to enlist our worship team saxophonist/keyboardist Deacon Aaron West to lend an amazing sax solo to the song as well, just to put the icing on the cake, so to speak. Thanks to Aaron, Ayce, and to Eric King, an awesome producer and engineer who was responsible for the excellent session that yielded this song and many others!! You all are sick! Blessings & LOVE to O Smith, Josie & Arden Blake also, the whole camp is DOPE!! Respect Peace & Power.

Wednesday I’m meeting with my A&R rep Joe Conte (how sick is that, we basically have the same name!!) for a consultation discussing & laying out the framework for the nationwide college & internet radio single campaign we’re about to run. Very exciting! Please keep me in your positive thoughts & prayers! And don’t be surprised when you hear some of that new Joe Con blasting out of your speakers very soon!! Your support & love is not just appreciated, it’s reciprocated!! LOVE LOVE LOVE!! Stay fly folks, til the next time… remember, don’t BE GOOD, BE GOD!

Yours Truly,

Joe Con

“15 Minutes of Fame” @ POPLock Gallery…

Posted in Music on January 9, 2010 by Joe Con

Wake up sleepy heads!! It’s 2010 & there’s an awesome energy in the atmosphere! Big things are brewin’, and to ring in the new year right, we’re having a multi-media event @ POPLock Gallery in downtown LA. POPLock is a new gallery row art space curated by Lexie Gehrke, featuring an exciting mix of LA’s vast pool of talented painters, designers, musicians, & artistic visionaries. POPLock’s motto, “Linking Lost Angeles Culture to the People,” speaks of the desire to build a scene around the common ground shared by the arts, focusing on the symbiotic relationship created through the interplay between form & genre. The energy is hot, raw, & young. The stage is set. The time is now. We want our 15 Minutes of Fame…

"...Give Us 15 Minutes of Fame, and We'll Change the World..."

Come join us down town this Wednesday, January 13th, 2010 @ PopLock, on 5th St. between Broadway & Spring, from 7 pm – 12am for our gallery opening featuring art by Davey Detail, Double D’s, Rabi, Evanimal, Snowy & more, as well as LIVE performances, music, free entry, booze, & food, plus giveaways, special guests & much more!! Press will be there, & we expect a big turnout, so kick off the New Year with a POP!! Because now, it’s not enough to have 15 Minutes of Fame… but just watch what we do with ours!!

Joe Con is the Word Made Fresh!!

“15 Minutes” is a single produced by Cav3 from Joe Con’s upcoming album “The Word Made Fresh”, due for release in the coming season. In celebration of the song’s release (which will usher in Joe Con’s first national radio campaign as on of the first singles to drop), we are having a “15 Minutes” video shoot @ the “15 Minutes of Fame” event @ POPLock. Instead of a typical fantasy club scene video, this will be a raw, organic approach to capturing the essence of our movement by getting candid footage from a real crew event. In this way we will highlight each of the elements involved, using the music to advance the visual art, and vice versa. If it sounds too cool for school, that’s because it is. Come check us out this Wednesday, January 13, 2010…

Two New Shows Added!!

Posted in Hip Hop, Music on October 14, 2009 by Joe Con

I am pleased to announce the addition of two upcoming ConCave shows in the next few weeks. For those of you who don’t know, ConCave is just another way of saying Joe Con & Cave (aka Caveman). It’s a name we adopted for an album we made a while back called “ConCave: ZooLife” (cdbaby.com/cd/concave), and we still rock the moniker on certain occasions. What’s important is Cave a dope artist with many tools in his musical belt & I’m blessed to share the stage & make many many tracks with him. And whether it’s Joe Con, or Cave, ConCave, know that we’re both fire, & when you put us together it only burner hotter!! The journey continues…we’ll see you out there.

Go to http://www.sonicbids.com/wordmadefresh for all the info…

Special shout out to my brother O. Smith for throwing the West LA College show on the 29th & for being a real m@thaf%cka!! I love you G!!

Blog Roll Please…….

Posted in Uncategorized on October 12, 2009 by Joe Con

What’s good with you this week folks??

I’ve had a pretty good one myself, & I hope you can say the same & more! I’ve been working hard @ my day job, which basically consists of chasing after Kindergarten, 1st & 2nd graders during P.E., Yoga & After School activities. It’s a blast…a wild, maddening, joyful kid-tastic blast…They seem so young. I remember way back when, but it seems so long ago. My 10 year high school reunion is next May (class of ’00 represent!!)…crazy how time do keep slippin’ slippin’ slippin’…anyhoo,

Aside from the job front, Friday night I played my first gig with the worship team (the band) @ The Embassy (www.theembassy.cc) . It was a special night, & I am very excited to make a joyful noise with such passionate, dedicated & beautiful men & women. I love you guys!!

On the hip hop front, we are pushing a new single produced by Dejah Fortune called “All Night All Day”. It is a smooth, sexy & at the same time bumping track perfect for the club, the ride, the radio & the ipod…not to toot our horn, but let’s just say that we’re really pleased with how the track came out & we hope you enjoy it as much as we do. We are actively pushing this song via internet radio @ jango.com. To make it into regular rotation on the site, we need at least 50 positive reviews, so please show some love & support by voting YES!! for “All Night All Day” . Here’s what to do: go to http://www.jango.com , do an artist search for Joe Con & give “All Night All Day” a rave review. Thank you for your vote of support!!

And I encourage each of you to write me with questions, comments, feedback, etc. of any kind! I welcome your involvement. I create as a vessel according to the Spirit that moves through me, but I strive to connect with you, my friends, fellow artists, music lovers, seekers, dreamers, doers, winners & losers, my fellow human beings. So don’t be shy ninja, holla @ ur boi!!

Also this week: Tuesday morning I’m heading in to the studio early with producer Georg Egloff to re-record a fun little guitar tune I wrote a few months back called “Gone Again” . We laid it down some weeks ago bare bones, but now we’re going to add a few splashes of musical color to liven it up a bit. Cave will be joining in to lend his percussive talents, so it should be a great morning session. Look for “Gone Again” online as part of a two song “single” available in time for the holiday season that’s rapidly approaching.

Today I want to highlight a few of my friends & colleagues, and their projects, events, art, etc. Consider this an inner blog blog roll.

The aforementioned Dejah Fortune is a multi-faceted entity unto himself: talented producer, event promoter, and veteran Bay Area/LA hip-hop & club scene mainstay are only a few of the hats this ubiquitous yet elusive cat wears with smooth ease & street swag steez. Currently Dejah resides in the East Bay & is working with long time collaborator Sense6 on Team Razorfang (www.teamrazorfang.com), an offshoot crew/promotion/design/production company. If it sounds a little mysterious, it’s probably because they want it that way. Team Razorfang is the brainchild of Sense6, an accomplished multi-elemental hip-hop head in his own right. When I met Sense6 he was DJ-ing for a Bay Area crew called Sol Rebelz. We were all close from like ’03 & we remain so to this day. One Fiyah Fam!! At the same time, Sense was engineering at Red Dot Studios in Tracy, CA. Eventually he opened his own studio in downtown Oakland called the Oakland Zoo. We’ve worked there together many times. It’s a great spot & Sense is an excellent engineer & producer who has consistently inspired & pushed me to expand & refine my artistic vision, all the while being creatively supportive & professional. For now, Sense has moved on to bigger & better. He uses his position as graphic designer (yeah, he does that too, & pretty damn well I’d say) at IMG — an up & coming full service artist development, marketing, & tour support service with a seriously awesome roster of clients already to their name, including Collie Budz & the entire Hieroglyphics crew among several others — to hone his craft, soak in the business game from his IMG cohorts, & solidify his networking & promotional skills, all the while continuing to increase exposure for & draw attention to Team Razorfang. If you haven’t done so, do yourself a favor and visit their website, check out their upcoming events (keep your eyes & ears out for special Joe Con performances @ Team Razorfang shows) & stay tuned, because there are certainly moves being made in the Bay…

Next I wanna give some love to all my friends at Natural High!! NATURAL HIGH!!! You have to be there… Lady T, Hank G, & Talissa Love have been holding it down, co-hosting this awesome open mic / featured artist event for years now, but the momentum continues to grow each and every week as more and more people realize this is not only the best open mic in LA, but it houses the richest collection of soon-to-be-discovered musical & poetic talent as well. The list of artists who have graced the Natural High stage are too numerous to name, but every Tuesday in Culver City there are guaranteed to be multiple artists of varying craft, genre, & style capable of giving you the best kind of cold chills of soul satisfaction. The venue is also a fabulous restaurant with a nice bar & is the perfect setting for a delightful evening of wining, dining & enjoying the sweet sounds of the new underground avant-garde. (www.myspace.com/naturalhighlive)

Last but certainly not least for this edition of inner-blog blog roll (sounds like the worst tasting sushi ever…blog roll…yuk!!)…last but not least is my good friend & brotha from anotha Nathan, who produces under the alias ETHX…This man makes amazing music, killer beats of all kinds, from hardcore knockers to up-tempo dance able joints to booming epic anthems to dark sexy electro trance heaters. Plus he has a ton of energy, he works hard, he’s a world traveler,(recently returning to the Bay Area from an extended stay in Japan), and he’s a hell of a nice guy. Oh, and we’re working on a project together. It’s in the mixing & post-production phase, so it’s in ETHX”s good digital hands, so to speak. It’s a seven track EP called “The Dish” , and we’re looking to serve it up sometime early in 2010. Look for a sneak peek at an early mix of one of the tracks next week. And, for all things ETHX, visit http://www.ethxmusic.com . It’s the link to all links!

Alright folks, that about wraps it up for tonight. I love you guys! Remember to visit jango.com & give “All Night All Day” positive comments so it can make its way into the regular rotation! Also check out some of these other sites & peeps I highlighted! They’re sure to turn you on to some real shit! One LOVE family. Stay God.

Yours Truly,

Joe Con
